Dansand in Ostend: a unique dance festival by the sea
Ostend is more than just the queen of Belgium’s coastal cities — it’s also home to one of the most original dance festivals in the country: Dansand. This cultural and artistic event blends contemporary dance, nature, public space, and an easy-going atmosphere. If you’re into festivals, dance, or just looking for an inspiring summer experience, Dansand is not to be missed.
A dance festival like no other
Organized by Kaap, the contemporary arts centre based in Ostend and Bruges, Dansand stands out thanks to its extraordinary setting. Instead of traditional theatres, performances take place on the beach, in the dunes, along the promenade, and in iconic spots around the city. The combination of movement and natural scenery makes for a poetic and immersive experience that’s hard to forget.
A rich and diverse programme

Dansand offers a wide-ranging programme of contemporary dance performances, installations, workshops, and artistic encounters. It showcases both Belgian and international artists, many of whom create pieces specifically designed for the unique surroundings of Ostend.
What’s more, most of the festival is free or pay-what-you-can, making it accessible to a wide audience — from art lovers and families to curious tourists just passing by.
Our review: an absolute gem
To be honest, this festival is a brilliant idea. Hosting a dance festival outdoors, by the sea, is already a dream scenario. But doing it in Ostend, with its charming streets, seaside atmosphere, and glorious sunny weather — it’s simply magic.
We had an amazing weekend: great vibes, just the right amount of people, and an inspiring selection of performances. We saw dancers move across the sand, splash in the surf, and perform against the backdrop of historic buildings. There was something deeply human and moving about it all. A breath of artistic fresh air — right between land and sea.
Why you should absolutely go
- Because it’s one of the only open-air dance festivals in Belgium.
- Because it’s free and inclusive.
- Because dancing barefoot in the sand at sunset is an unforgettable experience.
- Because it lets you discover Ostend in a completely new way.
- And because honestly, this is one of the most inspiring cultural events of the summer.
